| | Just some snaps. |
hiya ya all Well last weekend we went down squires gate,we met the wind surfer's,it was great fun. Wee toby had a fun time it was very windy but hey that is what is required. I will post some pics of that day,coz i just might do it myself.
This is a pic of my own honey bees when they swarmed which they did frequently,i did manage to get them back to the hive. I so loved observing them as they came and went all summer long but as you see from the pic you have to be on your guard. You have to admire the honey bee for its elaborate social structure whose smooth functioning has long been the envy of philosophers. JUST over 30 years ago there was a brief vogue for disaster movies about deadly swarms of bees attacking the human race. Today the very real prospect of their total extinction is far more disturbing than anything seen in those films. Given the choice between living with psychotic killer bees or no bees at all, despite being disappointed that there was no easier third option, I know what I'd plump for.
As honey bees are the most vital insect pollinator on the planet, the fact that they're currently disappearing in vast quantities is obviously cause for some alarm; without their assistance our entire system of global food production could collapse. And that's obviously quite serious. Who Killed the Honey Bee? offered a variety of possible explanations for this mysterious phenomenon, although seeing as even the world's foremost entomologists remain baffled by a catastrophe they've dubbed "colony collapse disorder", it was always going to prove inconclusive.
Most of the blame rests on pesticides, in particular a sophisticated new strain ingrained within the seeds of crops, foodstuffs and plants themselves. The theory is that bees are infected during pollination; the resultant brain damage and amnesia causes them to forget their way back to the hive, resulting in its collapse. Fantastic IQ fact: when a bee finds a good nectar source, it returns to its hive to perform a complicated "waggle dance" that somehow maps out the route for the rest of the colony. Once the bees are gone, Bruce Forsyth has been ordered to carry out an equivalent service for the entire human race. Once Brucie's gone, God knows how we'll cope.
The only proven contributor to this "bee holocaust", as one farmer described it, is the varroa destructor, a parasitic mite which lays waste to bees. The varroa is prevalent all over the globe apart from in Australia, where farmers make a fortune from exporting bees to depleted countries. Globetrotters be warned: consignments of hundreds of thousands of bees are regularly stored in the holds of Australian commercial aircraft. Now there's a disaster movie waiting to happen.
